"You are not what happened to you", but pause.
What happened to you does significantly shape who you think you are, who you become, and what you believe.
Recognizing this is where healing begins.
At Flamingo Trauma Recovery, we use a framework called Trauma-Informed Spiritual Intervention®. It recognizes that healing your soul isn’t just about feeling better. It’s about understanding what you believe, where that belief came from, and whether it’s helping or hurting your healing process.
Your belief system is the inner framework that helps you make sense of your life. It’s how you interpret what you've gone through and what you expect to happen next. Some of those beliefs are rooted in faith. Others come from pain, fear, or experiences that never got fully processed. All of it matters.
Your belief system is shaped by three parts:
Foundation – What you were first taught or exposed to
Formation – How your life experiences added to or challenged those beliefs
Faith – What you trust to be true now, even when life doesn’t make sense
Sometimes, what we believe lines up with what the Bible teaches. But sometimes, it doesn’t. And that doesn’t mean you’re unfaithful or rebellious. It means you’re human. It means your doctrine—the set of beliefs you’ve come to trust—has been shaped by more than just Sunday sermons.
Yes, doctrine can be taught in church. But personal doctrine, or individualized doctrine, is different. It’s the set of spiritual beliefs you’ve internalized, often without realizing it. It’s how you explain why things happen the way they do. It’s what you whisper to yourself when life hurts. Sometimes, those beliefs don’t match what you say you believe. That disconnect is called a stronghold—and it can keep you stuck even when you're trying to move forward.
That’s why we do more than pray for you.
We pray with you.
We listen with you.
We reflect with you.
Because counseling is spiritual. And questioning your beliefs is not a betrayal of faith. It's part of rebuilding it safely.
So if you’ve ever wondered why you keep struggling even though you believe in God…If you’ve ever felt like your faith isn't working the way it's “supposed to”…If you've ever tried to pray something away but still felt bound…
Start by asking, What do I really believe?
And then ask, Where did that belief come from?
Healing begins there.
